Making Difference: One Step At A Time
On this glorious occasion of the 68th anniversary of Indian Independence, Sustainable IITD wishes you a very happy Independence Day! Spread the joy of freedom to one and all!
Our motherland’s history with the environment has always been unique. It has always been a distinguishing feature of our culture that has separated us from the rest of the world. Our ancestors not only understood the geography of our motherland, but the very nature of its creation. Much evidence reiterates the fact that our ancestors were well-versed in the concept of sustainability and environmental conservation. They were keen to amalgamate innovation and sustainability, and create enterprising solutions to protect and rejuvenate their ecosystem.
India’s Golden Ages of past often strike the Western world with an awe that could not be contained. The sheer ingenuity of her people in helping her preserve the environment came across as highly fascinating for the explorers from the West, who were firmly grounded to their stale cities. But with years of colonialism that took their toll on India’s people, we were suddenly left with no choice but to obey the whims of our colonial masters. Until August 15th, 1947.
On the stroke of midnight that day, while the world slept on, India awoke to life and freedom.
But nearly seventy years on, we are now plagued by the same problems that plagued the West two centuries ago. Most of our population remains unfed while the rich seamlessly waste our nation’s resources, our forests and rivers have shrunk and perished, while our motherland’s other children – the animals and wildlife which found sanctuary in India – have lost their homes to our greed.
And that is the broad spectrum of issues that Sustainable IITD wishes to target the coming year. We want to heal our nation once again, one milestone at a time. We desire that our campus becomes the focal point of cutting-edge sustainability research and innovative environmental technologies, where the concept of sustainability is an integral part of our lifestyle.
But we cannot do it alone. We need your help, your efforts and your support in creating this vision of a green campus, to make our campus another sparkling emerald in our grand motherland. It is time once again, to take initiative and fight a new evil, to throw away the yokes of environmental degradation burdening us once more.
“The achievement we celebrate today is but a step, an opening of opportunity, to the greater triumphs and achievements that await us. Are we brave enough and wise enough to grasp this opportunity and accept the challenge of the future?”
– ‘Tryst with Destiny’, Jawaharlal Nehru
Once again, on behalf of the entire team of Sustainability IITD, I wish you a very happy Independence Day!
